Privacy Policy

We get it - privacy policies are usually boring and scary. We’ve tried to make this one actually readable, and to be clear about what we do (and don’t) do with your data.

This policy applies to people who use Operator in the United Kingdom.

TL;DR

What is Operator?

Operator is your AI safety companion - basically Sam, a friendly voice on the phone when you’re travelling alone. It’s designed to make late-night walks or solo taxi rides feel safer, but it isn’t an emergency service.

What information do we collect?

The basics we need

When you set up Operator, you provide:

Your location (if you let us)

When you're on a journey, we might ask for your location. Here's why:

Important: You don't have to share your location. Operator still works without it, you just won't get location features.

How you use the app

We use Fathom Analytics (a privacy-focused analytics tool) to understand things like:

This is completely anonymous - we can't connect it to you personally. No tracking and no cookies following you around the internet.

How do we use your information?

We use your information only to run the service and help to make you feel safe:

Calls are handled automatically by our systems and service providers. We don’t have people listening in to conversations as part of the service.

Our legal basis for using your data

Under UK data protection law, we need a lawful reason to use personal data. Here’s how that works for Operator:

Where does your information live?

On your phone

Your profile (name, number, safety contact) is stored locally in your phone’s browser storage - not on our servers. This means:

With our trusted partners

To make Operator work, we use some great services:

Each provider only receives the information needed to perform their role, and we choose partners that take data protection seriously. Each of these providers has their own privacy policies, which explain how they handle data in more detail.

Who do we share your info with?

We don't sell your data. Ever. Full stop.

The only times we share your information:

What we don’t do with your data

We don’t use your data for advertising, profiling, or background surveillance. We don’t sell personal data, and we don’t track you outside of Operator.

How do we keep your data safe?

We take security seriously:

Your rights

You're in control of your data:

How long we keep data

We only keep personal data for as long as it’s needed to provide the service, support users, or meet legal requirements.

Important note about call data: While your profile stays on your phone, our partners (ElevenLabs, Twilio) may keep records of calls and texts for their own purposes. To request deletion of this data:

If you’re not happy with how we handle your data, you also have the right to make a complaint to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk

Who can use Operator?

Currently UK only: Operator currently only works with UK phone numbers (starting with 07 or +44). We're planning to expand to other countries in the future.

You need to be at least 13 years old to use Operator. If you're under 18, we recommend asking a parent or guardian if you can use it.

International use

While Operator is currently UK-only for phone numbers, if you're a UK user traveling abroad:

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we do:

Who’s responsible for your data

Operator is operated by Chapter 33 Ltd., based in the United Kingdom. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have questions about how your data is handled, you can contact us at sam@heyoperator.uk
